“Amitji was first thought as Mr. India”- Javed Akhtar

Renowned writer/lyricist Javed Akhtar, shared the fact that makers had thought of having Amitabh Bachchan for the 1987 blockbuster “Mr India” at an conversation in 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.

“A film was being started by Pramod Chakravorty with Amitabh Bachchan in the leading man and they took first shot in a tape recorder and his voice was played that was the Mahurat shot. So we thought when this voice could make the mahurat shot it could be used in whole film also, that is what the idea  we had,” he said at the event.

“But then again it could become reality, Salim sahab and I went our own ways and this story line was left with me. Things changed in that time and did not work in that way. When I approached to producers everybody liked the idea but were scared to take risk. And finally Boney Kapoor ‘beat the bullet’,” he recalled.

The third day of the festival saw gathering of “Mr. India” with the cast and crew of the film including Sridevi, Anil, Satish Kaushik, producer Boney Kapoor narrating their experiences of the film.

“The success of a film depends upon the characters of film, actor, who convey the story, director and other people. People watch a film again and again because of the characters the film has,” Akhtar added.

Directed by Shekhar Kapur and written by Salim-Javed, “Mr. India” was one of the biggest hits and made a mark in Hindi Film world.
